Announcement – Matka wins Museum of the Year Award
Skopje, 18.05.2018 – The Matka Exhibition Center has won the Museum of the Year Award presented by ICOM (International Council of Museums) – Macedonia. The award was presented on the occasion of May 18 – International Museum Day for outstanding achievements in museum activity in 2017.
EVN Macedonia opened the exhibition center Matka last year. It has so far been visited by over 7,000 people and it was even presented at the Annual Conference of the European Museum Academy. In Macedonia, this is the first center that covers the technical sciences, uses a modern museum approach, and the content in it is presented in a fun and interactive way. The installation is located in the building of the old hydropower plant on Matka, which is of particular importance to the citizens of Skopje because it enabled the city’s growth and development in the 20th century. The project was preceded by intensive research, and in the exhibit today you can see original old devices, archival materials, films, photographs, interviews, and interactive models that were created especially for this purpose and from which visitors learn while trying out their functions and options.
Matka is open every day except Monday, from 10 am to 3 pm.
ICOM is the largest international organization of museum professionals present in 136 countries and has more than 35,000 members. The organization has consultative status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council. The council’s Macedonian branch was established in 1993 and ever since then has been setting professional standards that contribute to the creation of quality museum activity.
